Ally speaking: Noah (Neighbourhood Network) — building an engaged city

8 April 2026

My name is Noah van der Hoeven (31) and I work at Stichting Burennetwerk as Project Leader for Innovative Projects & Business Relations. In this role, I focus on establishing collaborations between companies and our organisation, with the aim of supporting as many Amsterdam residents as possible. After spending ten years in the music industry, I decided to change direction. I wanted to channel my energy and experience into something that directly contributes to the city where I grew up: Amsterdam. Connecting people and organisations to do something good for the city together gives me great satisfaction on a daily basis.

Sometimes the most beautiful collaborations arise from a shared conviction: that we are collectively responsible for the city in which we live. For Burennetwerk, that's precisely what it's all about. As an ally of the Nieuw Amsterdams Verbond (NAV), we experience daily how powerful connection can be when businesses and community initiatives find each other.

The neighbourhood network is committed to Amsterdam residents who could use some extra support. We do this by connecting neighbours: a volunteer who does the shopping for an elderly neighbour, someone who helps with a small job around the house, or simply offers a listening ear. These are often small gestures, but they have a huge impact on people's daily lives in the city. We also organise impactful events, such as our upcoming freedom meal on 5 May in collaboration with Stichting RITA in the Reguliersdwarsstraat. For this, we are bringing together 50 seniors and 50 young volunteers from Amsterdam to celebrate freedom and enjoy a meal outdoors.

The Nieuw Amsterdams Verbond plays an important role in this. As a network, NAV brings together social initiatives and companies that want to actively contribute to a more social and stronger Amsterdam. For Burennetwerk, this has already led to valuable collaborations.

A prime example of this is our collaboration with JCDecaux. Thanks to their involvement, we've gained greater visibility in the city through advertising shelters. For an organisation like Burennetwerk, this is incredibly valuable: it helps us reach more Amsterdam residents and engage more people in assisting their neighbours. They also advise us on all our communications. But the collaboration goes even further. JCDecaux has also put us in touch with a confidential advisor who supports Burennetwerk. This shows how a partnership can deepen and how companies can utilise their expertise to strengthen social initiatives.

A great collaboration is also being developed with SportCity. These kinds of connections show exactly what Nieuw Amsterdams Verbond stands for: creating encounters and opportunities that might otherwise never arise. When allies can find each other, there is room for new ideas and initiatives that help the city move forward.

The beautiful thing about my job is that you continually see how many companies want to contribute to a better city, as soon as they get the chance to do so in a concrete way. In my role at Burennetwerk, I try to create those opportunities by connecting companies and social initiatives.

The Nieuw Amsterdams Verbond shows how powerful such a network can be. By connecting allies, collaborations arise that go beyond mere intentions. They lead to real impact for Amsterdam residents.

And ultimately, that's what it's all about: building a city together in which people look out for each other.
